When we think of education, the first thing we associate it with is knowledge. It is the fundamental ability that allows us to understand better and live well. Education is primarily considered as an investment for your future—but it can be quite expensive!

Thankfully, college students have access to a variety of scholarships.

However, this was not always the case. Way back in 1940, only 4.6% of the U.S. population finished a four-year college degree. This is in stark contrast to the 2021 statistics, which note 49.6% of students earning their degree, according to Educationdata.org.

This proves the point that American students are becoming more aware of the value of acquiring the best training and education to prepare for their future.

Rising College Cost

The cost of attending college gradually increases year by year. Going to a public college is generally cheaper than attending a private university. There is a 75% difference gap, with $10,662 – $23,630 as the average tuition at a public college and $42,162 at private schools.

According to a Sallie Mae survey, regular families worry more about the financial aspect of a college degree than the quality of education that universities and colleges offer. Almost 80% of families agree that education cost impacts their decision-making.

There are several reasons why college cost is still vastly rising. The overall economic climate is one of the most critical factors influencing college tuition. States had less money to work with after the recession.

Disadvantages of Loans

A student loan debt continuously incurs huge interest and often takes decades to pay off. Many students often work more than one job to ensure they pay off their college loans, especially if the loan must be paid before graduation.

Under specific conditions, loans that remain unpaid can result in a bad credit score and often penalize non-paying individuals. It is said that student loans have the highest delinquency rates, much more than car loans and mortgages.

There is no doubt that these debts are pulling down the credit scores of most students in America, leaving them at a disadvantage in their future loan applications.

Scholarships and Its Importance

This is when scholarships in the USA come into the picture. But the question is: can you get scholarships while in college? The answer to that is a resounding YES. To many, scholarships are the best alternative to still go to college but with minimized debts or even debt-free.

Scholarships are usually funded by private institutions, business entities, and organizations. They are typically granted based on the merits of the applicant, and most often, the basis for awarding scholarships relies heavily on your grades.

However, there are some other criteria that you need to meet to be eligible for such financial aid. These would include diversity, geography, financial need, talents, or skills.

These are important to consider earnestly because these are much better options than student loans. You will not ever have to pay back anything after college.

Scholarships for Distance Learning?

Tuition fees would vary, but they generally cost cheaper than most on-campus learning programs. Students who prefer distance learning do not incur any more expenses like transportation costs and dormitory fees if they choose to live on campus.

Online degrees are more flexible, too, enabling students to work, study, and live a well-balanced life. And, to make it even much better and appealing to students, online learning offers many ways to pay for tuition.

A variety of options and financial support are often proposed by these online learning institutions and can be accessed easily by those who take their college education seriously.

The good news is that there is a plethora of college scholarships that are widely offered by educational institutions, private organizations, non-profit groups, and the list goes on.

Academic Scholarships

Applying for a Scholarship Approved, Scholarship Application Form with Pen on a desk

The need-based scholarships are precisely what the name indicates: these are funds for students who need financial assistance. Grants are need-based too, and they are often guaranteed by the Federal government like the Pell Grant.

On the other hand, need-based scholarships are typically merit-based, but with some elements of financial needs as well. Both cases are given as free money, meaning you will be provided funding from sponsors like the government if you availed a grant, and an institution or entity if you avail for a need-based scholarship.

In most cases, need-based considerations are also commonplace in academic or merit-based scholarships. Here are some need-based programs which are easy scholarships to apply for:
