What career choices do I have as a Biology graduate?
Earning a degree in Science is in itself already a significant achievement that qualifies you for several jobs in private firms, the government, or the academe. What careers can you get with a Biology undergraduate degree?
Dentistry
In dentistry, your knowledge of Biology (i.e., human anatomy) is of great importance. Following your Biology undergraduate program, you may complete an accredited postgraduate program either in dental medicine, dental surgery, or dentistry.
Environmental Scientist
A degree in Biology is a perfect springboard for landing a job in this field. As an environmental scientist, you will study and craft policies to protect the water, air, flora, and fauna, along with other environmental elements.
Geneticist
In this field, you need an extensive background in Chemistry and Genetics. Also, having a postgraduate degree in Genetics boosts your career even more. Genetics lab work usually involves conducting tests to, among other things, identify possible genetic mutations.
Today, genetics counselors–holders of a specialized postgraduate degree–help people understand how genetics relate to their psychological, medical, reproductive, and familiar conditions and issues.
High School Teacher
A degree in Biology also opens doors to career opportunities in the academe. Biology high school teachers are always in demand! But to be one, you must have a Master’s in Teaching (Secondary) degree program after completing your Biology undergraduate degree.
Ideally, the preferred undergraduate program for a Biology high school teacher would combine Biology Studies with other units in different fields. Second learning-area options include Languages, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Humanities, Design, English, or the Arts.
Laboratory Technician
A biology degree holder’s expertise and knowledge in biology are very useful if you’re thinking of becoming a laboratory technician. After finishing your biology degree, you can enroll in a postgraduate program for laboratory technicians. You can then work in microbiology or a medical laboratory.
As a medical technician, you are responsible for testing human body specimens, lime, urine, and blood, assisting with diagnosis and treatments of disease, and at times, helping prepare reports that strictly adhere to quality control standards.
Medical Researcher
As a medical researcher, you are tasked to conduct studies and experiments to investigate diseases and their treatments. But to secure a career in this field, you must go beyond your biology degree level and obtain a Ph.D. or MD degree. Medical researchers are found in several areas like hospitals, universities, and pharmaceutical companies.
Job titles under medical research include histology scientist, clinical research associate, research officer, research assistant, research scientist-medicinal chemistry/drug discovery, research program officer, scientific officer-pathology officer, or research scientist.
Medical Practitioner
To successfully become a doctor, you need to complete a four-year medical degree program. One of the best ways to prepare yourself to become a doctor is to start with a degree in biology. It also helps to have a few courses in Biochemistry, Physiology, and Anatomy during your undergraduate program.
